Tips on Improving Mental Wellbeing at Work

Work can be stressful and sometimes take over your life, therefore it can affect your mental wellbeing. Around 3 out of 5 people have experienced mental health issues because of work so try some of these tips out to improve wellbeing.

Manage Your Hours:

Managing when you work can be helpful, all employees have the right to request flexible working for any reason, this can include switching shifts, working from home, or working different hours. Working from home can be better, as it can mean that you can skip your commute to work and spending more time with family whilst still doing work.

Identify Your Triggers:

By working out what triggers stress or poor mental health can help to anticipate problems and think of ways to solve them. Take some time to reflect on events from work that could be contributing to your mental health, it can be surprising finding out how much you are actually coping with at work.

Talk About It:

It can be difficult to open up to someone about mental health concerns, but talking with a co-worker or a friend can help and could feel like a weight is being lifted off your shoulders. They could give you advice or just be there for you if you need to confide in someone. Some workplaces have signed up to Mates in Mind which helps for people to talk openly with their employer and colleagues. Most can get a confidential counselling session paid for by their employer which can be a great way to talk about troubling issues.

Exercise, Eat, Sleep:

Ensure that you are having a healthy, balanced diet, plenty of sleep, and a good amount of exercise. It is well known that these can help to not only boost our physical wellbeing but also mental wellbeing, being outdoors can help as well. Going for a twenty minute walk a day can help to clear your mind and help you to feel more relaxed.

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself:

Lots of people have demanding jobs and when you are doing long hours, lots of paperwork, or working overtime it can put a strain on your body. If you are struggling at work give yourself some space, this may be having a few days off or getting support outside of work. Just don’t be too hard on yourself because you are doing a great job!
