What is yoga?
Yoga is a form of exercise focussing on strength, flexibility and breathing. Yoga boosts mental and physical wellbeing. The main components are postures so it increases your strength and flexibility. Yoga originated from India around 5,000 year ago but it’s since been modified in a variety of ways across other countries.
Yoga’s Health Benefits
Yoga is a safe and effective way to improve your strength, flexibility and balance and a great way to increase your physical activity. It helps to perfect your posture, protect your spine, prevent cartilage and joint breakdown and increase your blood flow.
Some studies have proven that regular yoga is beneficial for people with:
- high blood pressure
- heart disease
- aches and pains
- lower back pain
Is yoga exercise?
Most forms of yoga are not quite strenuous enough to count towards the 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. However it’s a great strengthening exercise and 2 sessions a week will help to meet the government guidelines on muscle-strengthening activities.
Yoga improves your balance through strengthening your lower body so can help to reduce your risk of falling.
You do not need to be fit to start doing yoga. Classes are available for all fitness levels; some classes will require that you can get up and down from the floor whereas others can be chair based. You do not need to be flexible to start either, as yoga will improve your flexibility.
